Danny Mills Says Man City Players Won’t Mind Losing Titles

Former Manchester City defender Danny Mills believes the club’s players would not be overly troubled if their medals were taken away over financial rule breaches. He calls the removal of titles an arbitrary punishment that would do little to change what happened on the pitch.

City Face Serious Premier League Allegations

Last month, City were found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought by the Premier League, in what has been described as one of the biggest scandals in sporting history. The league said the club used sham agreements to manipulate its accounts by around £900 million over nine seasons between 2009 and 2018, a period in which City won eight trophies. The club maintains its innocence and is appealing the verdict.

If the appeal fails, potential sanctions include points deductions, relegation and the stripping of titles. The scale of the allegations has led many to reconsider how that era of success should be judged, and whether honours won during it can stand.

Mills Defends Players’ Achievements

Mills, who made 54 appearances for City between 2004 and 2009, argued that honours earned on the pitch cannot simply be erased. Speaking to Gambling.com, he said you can’t take those moments away from players and fans. In his view, rewriting the record books would not alter the memories of those who lived through the triumphs, and it would mean little to the players who lifted the trophies.

His comments add to a growing debate over whether financial penalties or sporting punishments are the fairer response when a club is found to have broken the rules. For now, City’s fate rests on the outcome of their appeal. Until then, the argument over whether titles should be rescinded for financial wrongdoing is likely to continue, with former players such as Mills firmly opposed.
