Emily Sisson Runs America’s Fastest Marathon, Breaks Record 43 Seconds
Emily Sisson is on top of the world and in the record books.
The 30-year-old became the fastest American runner to run a marathon on Sunday after finishing the Chicago Marathon at 2:18:29.
According to news, Sisson, from Wisconsin, broke Kiera D’Amato’s previous record by an impressive 43 seconds. D’Amato died the form at the Houston Marathon earlier this year.
After the race, Sisson, D’Amato, and two other women who hold the record – Joan Benoit Samuelson. And Deena Castor – posed for photos shared on the Chicago Marathon Twitter account.
“America’s marathon record today! 2:18:29. Honestly still sinking lol,” Sisson wrote in an Instagram post, which showed him holding a sign that read “American Record.”
“So overwhelmed – in the best sense – with all the beautiful messages and texts! Thank you everyone for the support.” Sisson told ABC affiliate WLS-TV that he did not initially expect to break the record.
“I think 2:20 is an ambitious goal, so I’m happy to be able to run 2:18:29 and finish second,” he told the news channel.
After D’Amato broke the marathon record earlier this year. She said she didn’t feel like she was going to hold the title for very long.” There are a number of American women who are also eyeing the record, so I thought if I did. If she didn’t go deeper , he won’t be mine much longer,” he said before the Berlin marathon in September, according to the New York Times.
While Sison set an American record, she finished second in the women’s category. First place went to Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya, who finished at 2:14:18.
Kenyan runner Benson Kipruto won the men’s title, finishing in 2:04:24.
