Google Launches SynthID AI Detection in Gemini App
As AI-generated content floods social media, users increasingly hesitate to share content for fear of spreading fake material. Google is addressing this concern with a new AI detection feature in its Gemini app that helps identify AI-generated videos and images.
Invisible Watermark Technology
Google’s SynthID embeds imperceptible digital watermarks into all AI-generated images, audio, text, and video created through Google’s AI tools. The new Gemini feature allows users to upload files and ask whether content was generated using Google AI. The tool scans for SynthID markers across both audio and visual tracks, then provides context about which segments contain AI-generated elements.
The detection capability is now available in Gemini for files up to 100 MB and 90 seconds in length, offering users a straightforward way to verify content authenticity before sharing.
Industry Adoption and Standards
While Google’s SynthID is limited to Google’s own tools, other major AI platforms have adopted alternative standards. Midjourney, OpenAI, and Meta use C2PA instead—a competing watermarking system designed to achieve similar transparency goals. Google has partnered with Nvidia to expand SynthID adoption across other AI tools, though widespread implementation remains limited.
As concerns about AI-generated content grow, these detection tools represent an important step toward transparency. Whether through SynthID or C2PA standards, users now have options to verify content authenticity and make more informed decisions about what they share online.
