Instagram Lets Creators Schedule Trial Reels for Smarter Content Testing

Instagram has rolled out a new update allowing creators to schedule their Trial Reels, adding another layer of control to one of the platform’s most useful content-testing features. The change means creators can now decide in advance exactly when their experimental content reaches users who don’t yet follow them.

What Are Trial Reels?

Launched in December 2024, Trial Reels let creators share content exclusively with non-followers before deciding whether to publish it to their existing audience. The feature was designed to help creators test new ideas without the pressure of immediate judgment from their regular followers. The results have been significant — Instagram reported that 40% of creators who used Trial Reels began posting more frequently, while the feature drove an 80% increase in Reels reach among non-followers.

Why Scheduling Changes the Game

Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri confirmed the update was directly inspired by user feedback, noting that a creator had previously asked why scheduling wasn’t possible — and the team simply built it. Now, creators can align Trial Reels with peak regional engagement windows or optimal posting times identified through their Instagram insights.

This opens up notable strategic opportunities. Creators have already been using Trial Reels as a growth tool, repurposing older high-performing content to reach new audiences without cluttering their main profiles. With scheduling now in the mix, that approach becomes far more precise and deliberate, allowing creators to run smarter audience-sampling experiments at exactly the right moment.
