Meta Starts Charging for Premium AI Features
Meta is introducing new charges for advanced AI capabilities across its apps and hardware, as the company looks to recoup some of its enormous spending on AI infrastructure and development.
The rollout centers on a new tier called Meta One Premium, which will unlock expanded AI functionality across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Meta’s AI glasses. Owners of the glasses will now need a paid subscription to get full use of features like conversation focus, a tool that helps amplify nearby voices in noisy settings. Reports indicate the premium plan costs roughly $20 a month, with free users limited to just a few hours of the feature monthly. Subscribers will also get improved customer support for their devices.
Warning Signs Had Been Building
Meta executives have hinted at these charges for over a year, citing the high cost of running AI systems at scale. The move follows a broader pattern of Meta adding paid add-ons across its platforms, suggesting more AI features could eventually carry a price tag.
A Rockier AI Rollout Than Expected
The pricing shift comes amid signs that Meta’s AI ambitions haven’t gone entirely smoothly. The company has cut thousands of jobs this year, partly attributing the reductions to AI taking over certain roles, though leadership has since acknowledged the transition was handled poorly. Separately, a security flaw in Meta’s AI-powered support system reportedly allowed attackers to hijack thousands of Instagram accounts, raising fresh concerns as the company shifts more moderation and support work to automated systems.
Taken together, the new charges suggest Meta’s massive AI bet may be proving costlier, and less immediately profitable, than initially projected.
