Viktor Gyokeres Must Learn From Calvert-Lewin, Says Lineker
Gary Lineker has identified a critical weakness in Viktor Gyokeres’ game that’s hindering the Arsenal forward’s goal-scoring return this season. Despite his impressive record of 97 goals in 102 appearances at Sporting Lisbon, the £64m summer signing has managed just five Premier League goals in 15 appearances for the Gunners.
The Movement Problem
Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Lineker highlighted Gyokeres’ reluctance to anticipate crosses and gamble on ball placement. The former England striker contrasted this with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s intelligent movement, pointing to the Leeds United forward’s near-post finish against Sunderland as the perfect example. Calvert-Lewin has scored in six consecutive Premier League matches, with all eight of his league goals this season coming from central box positions.
“As a striker, you have to gamble on where you think the ball might go,” Lineker explained. “You steal a march on the defender that way.” He emphasized that elite strikers like Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and Robert Lewandowski consistently make these kinds of proactive movements.
Adaptation and Support
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended Gyokeres, noting the forward is still adapting to the Premier League after joining without a preseason. The club has provided full support as the Swedish forward adjusts to new teammates and the league’s demands. Shearer agreed with Lineker’s assessment, suggesting Gyokeres would benefit from more traditional wing play while building confidence.
With Arsenal facing Aston Villa in a crucial Tuesday fixture, Gyokeres will have an opportunity to demonstrate improved movement and return to goal-scoring form. His penalty against Everton remains his only league goal since November, making this tactical adjustment crucial for both player and club success.
