X Bans InfoFi Projects From Mass Posting
X has announced a major crackdown on spam by revoking API access to apps that reward users for posting content. The move specifically targets information finance (InfoFi) projects linked to the cryptocurrency community, which offer tokens and rewards to amplify project messages across the platform.
According to Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, these incentive-based apps have created significant problems. “InfoFi has led to a tremendous amount of AI slop and reply spam on the platform,” Bier stated. “We have revoked API access from these apps, so your X experience should start improving soon.”
Crypto Community Under Fire
The ban represents the latest escalation in X’s ongoing battle with its cryptocurrency community. Earlier this week, Bier targeted mass “GM” (good morning) posts, which are common in crypto circles, by penalizing short-form replies in the algorithm. This sparked backlash from crypto enthusiasts, prompting Bier to reverse the change after users threatened to abandon the platform.
Long-Term Platform Strategy
This latest action could reignite tensions, as many crypto communities rely heavily on X for project promotion and value amplification. InfoFi groups use coordinated posting as a key promotional strategy, making this change particularly impactful for the space. However, the restrictions align with X’s broader goals to improve user experience and reduce platform toxicity. Additionally, reducing spam posts lowers data processing costs for xAI, making the company’s AI operations more financially sustainable over time.
The decision highlights X’s ongoing efforts to balance community interests with platform health and profitability.
