X Clarifies Location Data Accuracy for New Account Info Feature

X has provided clarity on its recently launched “About this account” info panels, which display user location, account creation date, username changes, and account creation method. The feature aims to enhance platform transparency and help users identify bot accounts and foreign-based accounts that may influence political discussions. However, X acknowledged that initial location data is not entirely accurate across all profiles.

Why Location Data Shows Inaccuracies

X’s Head of Product Nikita Bier explained that location inaccuracies stem from outdated database processes used to estimate user locations. The system has proven unreliable, particularly for older accounts created through VPNs or devices routed through different regions’ servers. X committed to rectifying these errors within the week and is implementing VPN usage indicators on profiles to provide additional context.

New Safeguards and User Controls

Government accounts will not display location information to prevent potential security threats. Users can control their location display by choosing between showing a general region or specific country through their profile settings. The rollout generated significant controversy after revealing that several high-profile right-wing political accounts were based outside the U.S., reigniting discussions about foreign influence operations on the platform.

Despite the PR challenges, the feature’s core purpose remains valuable—providing transparency about account origins to help users better understand posting motivations and reduce foreign interference. Industry observers suggest the initial backlash may ultimately boost awareness of the location-sharing option among X’s user base.
