Nottingham Forest Survive Relegation Threat with Stunning 5-0 Rout
Pressure mounts on Tottenham and West Ham
With Burnley and Wolves already relegated, attention has turned sharply to Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, who now occupy the remaining two drop spots. Tottenham sit in third-from-bottom, just two points behind West Ham, and Friday’s result has significantly worsened their prospects. Forest’s commanding cushion above the dotted line means the pressure is now firmly on those two clubs to accumulate points in their remaining fixtures.
Forest ruthless from the first whistle
Forest dominated from the opening exchanges, taking the lead in the 16th minute when Igor Jesus’ header deflected into the net off Sunderland’s Trai Hume. The hosts’ misfortune deepened when goalkeeper Robin Roefs gifted possession to Morgan Gibbs-White, who fed Chris Wood for his first league goal since the season opener. Gibbs-White then scored himself three minutes later, with Jesus adding a fourth shortly after. Elliot Anderson completed the rout deep into stoppage time, inflicting Sunderland’s heaviest ever home defeat at the Stadium of Light.
Striker Chris Wood reflected on the significance of the result, noting that consecutive wins create breathing room and apply pressure on the sides below. Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, by contrast, offered a frank apology to the home supporters, acknowledging that a dip in intensity proved costly against a Forest side in sharp form.
