Instagram Launches AI Creator Labels to Boost Transparency

Instagram has introduced a new account label for creators who regularly use artificial intelligence tools to generate their content. The “AI creator” tag can be toggled on within a user’s profile settings, and once enabled, it appears on both the creator’s profile and any content they post. The move is designed to reduce confusion around AI-generated material and help viewers distinguish between human-made and machine-made content.

How the Label Works

The label displays a note on the creator’s profile stating that the account regularly uses AI creation tools. It builds on Instagram’s existing “AI info” labels, which creators can manually apply to posts or which the platform automatically adds when it detects AI-generated content. When both labels apply to a piece of content, the “AI info” label takes priority in the display.

Meta’s Broader AI Push

The update sits within a broader, and somewhat contradictory, strategy at Meta. While Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has previously warned that AI tools will soon produce content indistinguishable from human-created work, Meta continues to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in generative AI and actively encourages users to create AI-generated content within its apps. This means Meta is, in part, working to manage a challenge it has helped accelerate.

The new labelling system reflects a calculated bet that transparency is a more sustainable path than restriction. Rather than limiting AI content outright, Instagram is choosing to clearly identify it. The AI creator label is currently rolling out gradually, with wider availability expected in the coming weeks.
