Instagram Renames AI Profile Labels for Clarity

Instagram is overhauling how it labels artificial intelligence accounts on its platform, shifting from the previous “AI creator” tag to a new “AI generated profile” label. The change, announced this week, is meant to close a gap between what users expect and what they actually encounter when browsing profiles.

Why the Label Change Matters

The original “AI creator” tags were introduced back in May 2026, but Instagram found they weren’t doing enough to prevent confusion. The updated label will now include a description clarifying that images posted by the account may depict AI-generated characters. According to the platform, users have expressed frustration at discovering that a seemingly human profile was actually AI-generated, and they want clearer signals upfront about a profile’s nature.

Instagram also confirmed it will reduce the visibility of AI-driven profiles that fail to disclose their nature with the new labeling system, effectively penalizing accounts that try to pass as human-run.

Part of a Broader Industry Pushback

The move reflects mounting resistance across social platforms to unlabeled AI content and bot-driven accounts. Social media was historically designed for human-to-human interaction, and the growing presence of AI personas has unsettled that dynamic. Meta itself reportedly considered launching a wave of AI bot personas back in late 2024, intended to boost engagement by increasing replies and likes on user posts. That plan appears to have been quietly shelved amid rising criticism of AI content across the industry.

By tightening its labeling requirements now, Instagram seems to be prioritizing transparency over engagement gains from ambiguous AI accounts, giving users clearer tools to understand who — or what — they’re actually interacting with.
