Instagram Reels Adds More AI Translation Languages

Instagram has broadened the language options for its AI-powered Reels translation feature, adding Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Italian to the tool’s existing lineup. The update continues Meta’s push to help creators reach audiences beyond their native language by automatically translating both audio and captions.

How the Translation Feature Works

The AI system does more than swap out subtitles. It generates a synthetic audio track designed to sound like the original creator speaking the translated language, while also adjusting the creator’s mouth movements in the video to match the new audio. Meta has been developing and rolling out this capability since last year, and the company says it has already helped creators find new, interested viewers abroad.

There’s a slight discrepancy in how many languages are now supported: Instagram head Adam Mosseri put the number at 14, while a separate Meta press release cited 18. Either way, the expansion includes several languages spoken across India, which remains Instagram’s largest user base globally.

Creator Controls and Platform Rollout

Creators aren’t locked into the AI-generated dub. They can preview any translation, turn off lip-syncing, or scrap the translated version entirely before publishing. The feature is currently available in the Reels composer to creators with more than 1,000 followers, who can choose up to two target languages per translation.

Results can be inconsistent, and the lip-sync effect sometimes looks slightly unnatural even when the translated meaning comes through clearly. Still, for creators looking to test international appeal, enabling the tool costs little and could reveal unexpected engagement from new regions.

Meta is also extending translation support on Facebook, adding Bahasa, Indonesian, Arabic, French, Vietnamese, and Thai, with further languages expected soon.
