John Stones Bids Farewell to Manchester City After a Decade of Dominance

England and Manchester City defender John Stones will depart the club at the end of the current season, drawing the curtain on a remarkable decade-long association that coincides entirely with Pep Guardiola’s tenure. The 31-year-old joined City in the summer of 2016 as one of the first signings of the Guardiola era and quickly became a cornerstone of the team’s identity.

A Career Defined by Silverware

During his 293 appearances for the club, Stones contributed 19 goals and was part of a squad that lifted 19 major trophies — among them six Premier League titles and the coveted UEFA Champions League. The club paid tribute to him as the “very embodiment of Pep Guardiola’s City,” crediting his technical ability, passing range, work rate, and tactical intelligence. He also notably played a hybrid role, pushing forward from defence into midfield to give City an extra presence in build-up play.

Injuries Cloud a Stellar Legacy

In recent seasons, persistent injury problems have limited Stones’s availability and seen him drop down the pecking order, making his departure an inevitable conclusion. His contract expires this summer and will not be renewed, with both the player and club confirming the news.

Stones took to Instagram to mark the occasion, saying all good things must come to an end but that his time at City would remain with him forever.

He remains part of the England national squad and is expected to feature at the upcoming FIFA World Cup hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Stones’s exit follows the recently announced departure of club captain Bernardo Silva, signalling a significant transition at the Etihad.
