Mourinho Breaks Silence on Carneiro Touchline Row

Jose Mourinho has discussed his notorious clash with former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro for the first time in over a decade, yet the ex-Blues boss has once again stopped short of offering her an apology. The comments feature in Mourinho’s new three-part Netflix documentary, simply titled MOURINHO, which marks his first public reflection on the episode since reaching a settlement with Carneiro in 2016.

The 2015 Flashpoint
The controversy erupted during a Premier League clash with Swansea City in the 2015-16 season, when Carneiro and physio Jon Fearn ran onto the pitch to treat an apparently injured Eden Hazard, leaving Chelsea temporarily down to nine men after Thibaut Courtois had already been sent off. Mourinho’s furious touchline reaction included Portuguese language that Carneiro later said was discriminatory toward her as a woman, and English expletives directed at the medical staff. She was dropped from first-team duties and departed the club within a month.

Tribunal and Aftermath
Carneiro subsequently took Chelsea to tribunal, alleging discrimination and constructive dismissal, resulting in a settlement whose terms remain confidential, though it emerged the club had earlier offered her £1.2 million to stay quiet. Chelsea ultimately apologised to Carneiro and her family for the distress caused, but Mourinho declined to do the same at the time or since.

In the documentary, Mourinho maintains he treated Carneiro no differently than he would a male doctor, framing his outburst as simply the language he reaches for under pressure. Former captain John Terry backs the claim that players understood medical staff were discouraged from coming onto the pitch unless an injury was severe.
