Instagram Reels Expands AI Translation Languages
Instagram has expanded its AI-powered translation tools for Reels, adding support for Japanese, Korean, French, German and Italian on top of its existing language options. The update is part of Meta’s ongoing push to help creators reach global audiences without needing to produce separate versions of their content for different regions.
How the AI Translation Feature Works
Meta’s translation system doesn’t just convert captions and audio into another language — it also uses advanced AI models to sync a creator’s mouth movements with the newly translated speech. The goal is to make it look and sound as though the original poster is speaking the target language naturally, rather than presenting an obviously dubbed clip. Instagram says this approach has already helped creators connect with wider, more diverse audiences who might otherwise scroll past content in an unfamiliar language.
Availability and Creator Controls
There’s some inconsistency in how many languages are currently supported: Instagram head Adam Mosseri cited 14 languages, while a separate Meta press release put the number at 18, including several spoken widely across India, Instagram’s largest user market. The feature is available to creators with more than 1,000 followers, who can select up to two languages per translation. Creators retain control throughout the process — they can review translations, turn off lip-syncing, or scrap the translation altogether before publishing.
Meta is also rolling out similar AI translation upgrades on Facebook, adding languages including Bahasa, Indonesian, Arabic, French, Vietnamese and Thai, with more expected soon. As AI dubbing tools mature across social platforms, creators may increasingly lean on automated localization to grow their reach, even as questions remain about translation accuracy and how natural the results actually look.
