Why Ronaldo Is Not Among the Greatest World Cup Players
Cristiano Ronaldo is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players. The Portuguese superstar has won multiple UEFA Champions League titles, broken international scoring records, and built a legacy across clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United. Yet despite all of that, his standing as a World Cup icon remains surprisingly thin.
A tournament record that doesn’t match the hype
Ronaldo has featured in five FIFA World Cups and scored in each edition — an impressive consistency on the surface. But the deeper numbers reveal a different picture. His best campaign came in 2006 when he was just 21, helping Portugal reach the semi-finals. In 2010, he managed only one goal. In 2014, he entered the tournament carrying injury and Portugal crashed out in the group stage. His 2018 hat-trick against Spain in a 3-3 draw was stunning, but Portugal were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Uruguay. The 2022 edition proved most damaging to his reputation — he struggled for form and was dropped to the bench during the knockouts, with replacement Gonçalo Ramos scoring a hat-trick against Switzerland in his absence.
