Snap Opens Pre-Orders for $2,195 Specs AR Glasses

Snap has officially opened pre-orders for its Specs augmented reality glasses, positioning the device as a potential breakthrough in wearable computing. Unlike Meta’s upcoming AR glasses, which will rely on a separate compute puck, Snap built all the processing power directly into the headset, resulting in a bulkier frame that resembles safety goggles more than typical eyewear.

Design, Display, and Battery Life

Despite using advanced polymers to cut down on weight, Snap’s Specs still weigh in at 132 grams for the smaller size and 136 grams for the larger one, considerably heavier than Meta’s Display glasses. The device uses a proprietary liquid crystal on silicon display system offering a 51-degree field of view and a 16-million-color range, with Snap describing the visual experience as comparable to a large desktop monitor or a home cinema screen. Two Snapdragon processors handle vision tasks and core system operations separately. Battery life is rated at four hours per charge, extendable to roughly 20 hours using the included charging case, and a built-in LED signals when recording is active.

Pricing and the Competitive Landscape

Pre-orders are live now at $2,195, which includes a refundable $200 deposit. That places Specs well above Meta’s $799 Display glasses, though notably below Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro. Snap is also leaning on a celebrity-driven marketing campaign and hundreds of built-in AR lenses, covering uses from music education to visualizing invisible physical forces, to justify the premium price. With Meta’s rival AR glasses still a year away, Snap is betting that early access and its established creative tools will give it a head start in the wearable AR race.
