Threads Lets Users Guide Feed Algorithm with “Dear Algo” Posts

Threads is rolling out a new experimental feature designed to give users more control over their feed algorithm. The “Dear Algo” function allows users to type “Dear algo” at the beginning of a post, followed by a conversational message about what content they want to see more or less of on the platform.

How the Feature Works

According to Threads chief Connor Hayes, when users add “Dear Algo” to a post, the algorithm will refine their feed for up to three days based on their request. The adjustment isn’t permanent—it’s a temporary refinement that can become more lasting if users engage with the suggested content. Importantly, these “Dear algo” posts appear on users’ timelines as regular posts, making them visible to followers and potentially shareable across the platform.

Algorithm Customization Trends Across Social Media

AI-powered algorithm refinement is becoming a trend in social media apps, with YouTube launching a similar test last week, while X is using its Grok chatbot to help users refine their interests. Instagram is also trying out a dedicated listing of topics to update feed preferences.

Threads began testing this functionality in September, and the current live test expands on those initial learnings. The platform is only testing with select users currently but plans to expand the rollout over time.

While many users complain about algorithms negatively impacting their experience, research suggests that when given control options, users often don’t utilize them—making the real value of such tools potentially more psychological than practical.
