Instagram Expands Algorithm Control Tool to Explore Feed
Instagram has rolled out an expansion of its “Your Algorithm” content control feature, making it available within the Explore feed in addition to the Reels section. The update is being extended to all English-language users, offering them a more direct say in what content the platform’s recommendation system surfaces.
The tool allows users to input topic preferences — specifying what they want to see more or less of — and the algorithm adjusts content accordingly. Crucially, any changes made in either Reels or Explore will carry over to both surfaces, as Instagram confirmed it operates as a unified system.
How the Feature Works
Users can type in topics of interest directly or adjust preferences using topic pills displayed at the top of the Explore page. Instagram also allows users to share their selected interests via Stories, adding a social layer to the feature. Changes made in one surface automatically reflect across the other, making preference management seamless.
Will Users Actually Engage With It?
Despite widespread demand for algorithm transparency, history suggests most users rarely engage with manual controls once they’re available. From chronological feed options to privacy settings, these features tend to serve more as reassurance than practical tools. With AI-driven recommendations continuing to boost engagement across Meta’s platforms, it seems unlikely the company would offer this level of control if it expected mass adoption.
That said, placing the tool within a high-traffic surface like Explore increases its visibility significantly. Whether this nudges more users to actively shape their feeds remains to be seen, but it marks a meaningful step toward greater user autonomy on the platform.
