Threads Expands Manual Algorithm Control to All Users
Meta has officially rolled out “Dear Algo,” an AI-powered algorithm control feature to all Threads users in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The feature, which gives users direct influence over their feed content, represents a significant shift toward greater user agency in algorithmic curation.
How Dear Algo Works
Dear Algo allows users to take control of their Threads feed by crafting a public post beginning with “Dear Algo,” followed by their content preferences. For example, users can request to see more posts about live sports events or fewer posts about television shows they haven’t watched yet. Once shared, the Threads algorithm adjusts the feed based on that specific request for exactly three days, giving users a limited window to test their preferred content distribution.
The feature includes additional flexibility: users can repost another user’s Dear Algo request to apply their content preferences to their own feed, and they can also view and remove active Dear Algo requests at any time. This shareability aspect recognizes that content preferences vary across users, allowing community-driven feed customization.
User Demand Meets Algorithm Transparency
Meta’s decision to launch Dear Algo responds to a growing user trend. The company observed that people were already posting messages asking their algorithms to change what appeared in their feeds, prompting Meta to formalize this behavior into an official feature. According to Meta, Dear Algo is “an AI-powered feature that gives you more control over what you see by letting you tell Threads what’s important to you in the moment.”
The expansion addresses widespread concerns about algorithmic transparency and feed relevance. For years, users have criticized social media algorithms for creating echo chambers, promoting engagement-baiting over substantive content, and encouraging excessive doomscrolling. By introducing explicit preference channels alongside traditional engagement signals, Threads attempts to rebalance feed dynamics toward user satisfaction.
Rollout Timeline and Future Plans
Currently available in four major English-speaking markets, Meta has indicated plans to expand Dear Algo to additional countries, including Canada, in the coming months. The phased rollout allows Meta to monitor feature performance and gather user feedback before broader global distribution.
The launch reflects Meta’s broader commitment to AI innovation in 2026, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors the company plans to debut and test new AI products throughout the year. With 400 million monthly active users, Threads offers a significant platform for testing user-centric algorithmic tools that could influence how social media operates across Meta’s entire ecosystem.
