Threads May Now Be Bigger Than X, Says Zuckerberg

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says Threads may now have overtaken X, the platform once known as Twitter, as the leading short-form social app. Threads was built as a direct answer to X, and after early skepticism about its staying power, the app appears to be closing in on — or surpassing — its rival.

Zuckerberg on Why He Still Uses Both Apps

Speaking in a recent interview with Sources, Zuckerberg said he personally continues to use both platforms because each hosts different communities, including AI industry figures who remain active on X. He added that he typically shares the same content across both apps rather than favoring one.

User Numbers Point to a Tightening Race

The comments follow reports of declining X usage in the EU. A May prospectus from SpaceX put X’s monthly active users at roughly 550 million, up slightly from about 520 million in December 2025 — figures that differ notably from the 600 million Elon Musk cited in 2024. That gap suggests either a meaningful user decline or earlier overstatement of X’s reach.

Threads, meanwhile, crossed 500 million monthly active users in June, continuing steady growth since many former Twitter users migrated to the app after Musk’s 2022 takeover. Taken together, the numbers suggest Threads and X are now operating at a similar scale, marking a shift after years in which X held a clear lead.

For advertisers, overall size may matter less than which audiences are active where. As Zuckerberg noted, the goal is often to reach people wherever they already are — meaning both platforms are likely to remain relevant for brands, depending on their target communities.
