Meta Cuts 8,000 Jobs and Shifts Thousands to AI Roles
Meta is restructuring its workforce in a significant move, cutting approximately 8,000 roles and reassigning 7,000 employees to artificial intelligence initiatives. The social media giant informed staff of the changes on Monday, signaling a deeper commitment to replacing traditional roles with AI-powered systems.
According to internal communications, employees will be moved into four newly formed organizations designed around AI development. These units will operate with leaner management structures compared to other divisions, reflecting Meta’s push toward what it calls “AI native design structures.” Further details on the new roles were expected to be shared with staff later in the week.
A Pattern of Workforce Realignment
This is not Meta’s first significant round of cuts in recent months. Earlier in 2026, the company reduced 10% of staff at its Reality Labs division, which oversees augmented and virtual reality projects — a move widely interpreted as a retreat from its once-ambitious metaverse vision. The latest reductions further streamline an organization that has been gradually pivoting toward AI as its primary growth engine.
Zuckerberg’s AI Vision Takes Shape
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been vocal about AI eventually performing the work of mid-level engineers. He is reportedly even training an AI agent on his own daily decision-making to explore automating executive functions. With hundreds of billions being invested in AI infrastructure, these workforce changes represent the practical execution of that strategy.
Meta is expected to announce further layoffs later this week as the restructuring continues.
