Threads Tests Animated Stickers Feature for Posts

Meta’s Threads platform is exploring a new feature that could change how users express themselves on the social network. App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi discovered that Threads is testing animated stickers—GIF-style elements that users can embed directly within posts. Unlike existing GIF attachments, these stickers would function similarly to emojis, displaying animation within the main feed rather than in a separate panel.

Moving Beyond Traditional Attachments

The new sticker feature represents a shift in how social platforms approach visual expression. Twitter previously experimented with similar concepts, including animated profile images and custom emoji variants, though most were discontinued due to user distraction concerns. Threads could face similar challenges if animated elements become overwhelming, potentially creating visual clutter that detracts from content focus.

Engagement Growth at What Cost?

The animated stickers align with Threads’ broader strategy to increase engagement through in-stream visual elements. The platform’s very active feed already generates anxiety for some users, and adding more moving elements could intensify this issue. However, the feature might also fail to gain traction, limiting widespread adoption and minimizing potential downsides.

It remains unclear whether this feature will proceed to live testing or remain in the experimental phase. Threads may ultimately decide to abandon the project before any public rollout. Regardless, the test demonstrates Meta’s continued focus on competitive features and visual innovation as it works to establish Threads as a viable Twitter alternative.
