TikTok Shuts Down Nashville Office, Cuts 250 Jobs

TikTok USDS, the joint venture overseeing the platform’s U.S. operations, is closing its Nashville office, a move that will affect 250 employees. The office had served as a hub for part of TikTok’s local content moderation team, and the closure is scheduled to take effect on October 5, 2026.

How Employees Were Notified

According to reporting from the New York Times, staff at the Nashville location were informed of the decision through emails sent on a Wednesday morning. Several employees, speaking anonymously, said their access to company devices was cut shortly after and that they were told they would receive severance packages. TikTok USDS has attributed the decision to a broader push to streamline operations and better position its teams for sustained growth, though it has not clarified how the closure will affect its content moderation capacity going forward.

A Shift Toward Automation

The layoffs come just weeks after TikTok USDS released its first report on platform security and community guidelines enforcement, which detailed the scale of its moderation work. The report showed that between January 22 and March 31, 2026, TikTok removed more than 8.4 million videos, with roughly 82% of those removals driven by automated systems rather than human reviewers. That heavy reliance on automated detection suggests the company may be growing more comfortable letting AI handle tasks once managed by human moderators, which could help explain the staffing reduction in Nashville.

TikTok has not disclosed how it plans to replace the moderation capacity lost through the office closure. The platform currently serves more than 200 million users across the United States, making content moderation a significant ongoing operational challenge as the company continues to lean further into automated tools.
