YouTube Introduces AI Labels for Generated Music Across Its Apps

YouTube has started tagging music made with artificial intelligence, adding a visible “AI” label to its YouTube Music app and the main YouTube platform. The change responds to growing audience demand for clearer information about whether a song was created by people or by machines. The update was announced this week.

How the AI label works

Tracks that YouTube’s systems believe were produced primarily with generative AI will now display the label. Tapping it opens a short explainer confirming the content was AI-generated. YouTube says the tag applies when a generative model has been used to create core elements of a song, such as the composition and the vocals. The same labelling is being extended from YouTube Music to the main app, so viewers will see it wherever they find such tracks.

To apply the labels accurately, YouTube is relying on its own internal detection tools. It is also working with music industry partners to strengthen them. The company says its goal is to make it easy for listeners and viewers to understand what they are hearing and to have the right context about the music they choose.

Pressure builds across the music industry

AI-generated music has become a flashpoint in recent months, with several synthetic songs earning heavy radio rotation. The Guardian reported that an AI-made remix of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” recently reached the top of the charts in Australia. In response, the Australian Recording Industry Association introduced a rule that music must be substantially human-made to qualify for its charts.

Alongside the creative possibilities these tools offer, many in the industry worry that they undercut human artists by effectively using their own work against them. Against that backdrop, clearer labelling looks like a sensible step. It lets audiences know what has gone into a track, and it may shape how platforms and chart bodies handle AI music from here on.
