Real Madrid, PSG Advance as Sporting Lisbon Pull Off Historic Comeback

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain marched into the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday with commanding performances, eliminating Manchester City and Chelsea respectively. Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon completed one of the most dramatic reversals in the competition’s history to end Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt’s fairytale run.

Madrid and PSG Make Their Class Count

Real Madrid progressed with a 5-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City, winning 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium. The tie was shaped early when City captain Bernardo Silva received a red card in the 20th minute, allowing Vinícius Júnior to convert a penalty and add a second goal. PSG were equally ruthless at Stamford Bridge, beating Chelsea 3-0 to complete an 8-2 aggregate demolition. Two goals within the opening 14 minutes set the tone, with Kvaratskhelia, Barcola, and Mayulu all on the scoresheet. The win also served as revenge for PSG’s Club World Cup final defeat to Chelsea eight months prior.

Sporting Lisbon Rewrite History

Bodø/Glimt’s remarkable Champions League journey came to a heartbreaking end. Despite holding a 3-0 first-leg advantage, the Norwegian club were defeated 5-0 by Sporting Lisbon after extra time — the second-largest comeback in Champions League history, behind only Barcelona’s iconic 2017 turnaround against PSG.

In the quarterfinals, Sporting Lisbon will face Arsenal, who beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 on aggregate thanks to goals from Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice. PSG await either Galatasaray or Liverpool, with Galatasaray currently leading their tie 1-0.
