Class Action Complaint Accuses Apple of Unfair Practices in iCloud

A recent class action complaint filed against Apple alleges that the tech giant has implemented unfair conditions to maintain iCloud dominance in cloud storage for its devices. 

The complaint, filed in a northern California court, claims that Apple’s actions have created barriers for other cloud providers, resulting in higher fees for iCloud users without genuine competition.

Allegations of Unfair Conditions in iCloud:

According to the complaint, Apple has imposed “surgical technological restraints” on the types of files that other cloud providers can host, effectively limiting full-service storage options to iCloud for Apple device users. 

While users can store certain files with non-Apple providers, essential data like app and device settings can only be hosted on iCloud. This, the complaint argues, forces users to choose between managing multiple accounts or opting for iCloud’s convenience.

Stifling Competition:

The complaint contends that Apple’s restrictions are arbitrary and serve to stifle competition in the cloud storage market. 

Despite iCloud not offering superior security or functionality compared to other platforms, Apple has maintained dominance by rigging the competitive landscape in its favor, according to the complaint.

Legal Action and Potential Class:

Represented by Hagens Berman, the proposed class action would potentially cover tens of millions of Apple device users in the US.
