Ferguson Urges Carrick to Drop Fernandes Before Bournemouth Clash

Duncan Ferguson believes Michael Carrick should drop Bruno Fernandes for Manchester United’s meeting with Bournemouth on Sunday, and even consider selling the captain, after his public comments following a humiliating European night.

Heaviest Champions League Defeat in Decades

United lost 4-1 to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, their heaviest defeat in the competition since a 4-0 loss to Barcelona in November 1994. The result extended their winless run to seven matches across all competitions, piling further pressure on Carrick as he searches for answers.

After the final whistle, Fernandes appeared to openly question his manager’s tactics. Carrick has since fired back at the remarks and criticised his players. The episode came only a week after Lisandro Martinez took aim at the club’s senior hierarchy over a perceived lack of investment in the summer transfer window.

Ferguson Warns Against Repeating Martinez Mistake

Speaking on The Overlap Daily, the former Everton striker argued that a player discussing tactics or game plans in public crosses a line. He urged Carrick not to repeat what happened with Martinez, who kept his place in the team after his criticism before picking up an injury against Leeds United.

With Carrick fighting to keep his job, the Bournemouth fixture now looks like a pivotal test of his authority. Leaving out the captain would send a firm message about standards in the dressing room, but it would also remove one of United’s most influential players at a time when results are poor.

Wayne Rooney has also weighed in, criticising the outbursts from both Martinez and Fernandes. How Carrick handles the situation on Sunday may shape the rest of his tenure at Old Trafford.
