Instagram Shares Five-Step Formula for Better Video Content
Instagram has published a fresh set of tips aimed at helping creators produce more engaging video content, drawing on insights gathered from a group of creator consultants who use the platform’s Edits app. The company frames the advice around a five-step process meant to cover every stage of the editing workflow, from the opening frame to post-publish analysis.
Hooking Viewers From the First Second
According to Instagram, the opening moments of a video determine whether viewers stay or scroll past, so creators are encouraged to build their edits around a strong opening — a bold statement, an unexpected visual, or a question that pulls people in. Trimming anything that delays that hook is considered essential, and creators can track performance using the skip rate metric.
Beyond the hook, Instagram recommends cutting footage in sync with the rhythm of the audio track, using beat markers within Edits to align transitions with musical highs. Layering in on-screen text and subtle visual effects is also advised, both to reinforce key messages and to keep content accessible for viewers watching without sound.
Using Data to Refine Future Videos
Instagram stressed that creators should treat every video as a learning opportunity, reviewing insights such as drop-off points and the balance between saves and shares to diagnose what needs improvement. A high drop-off early in a clip signals a weak hook, while strong saves paired with weak shares suggest content is valuable but not easily passed along.
Finally, Instagram pointed creators toward streamlining their overall workflow — browsing trending formats, using templates, and posting directly from the Edits app to save time while staying on top of performance data.
