Meta Introduces Threads-Only Permissions for Business Accounts
Meta is giving businesses more granular control over how they manage their Threads presence, rolling out dedicated, task-based permissions that no longer depend on a linked Instagram account. The update lets companies assign Threads-specific roles to different team members directly through their business portfolio, rather than relying on Instagram’s existing oversight tools.
Decoupling Threads From Instagram
According to Meta, profiles that were previously tied to Instagram access settings will initially keep those inherited permissions, but businesses can now customize and manage Threads access independently going forward. The move follows Meta’s separate announcement that advertisers will no longer need an Instagram account at all to run ads on Threads, reinforcing a broader push to treat the app as its own standalone platform rather than an Instagram extension.
Threads’ Growing Scale
The changes come as Threads continues to expand its footprint, having reportedly reached 500 million monthly active users. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also suggested the platform may have now overtaken X in overall usage. With that scale, Meta appears to see a case for treating Threads as a distinct product requiring its own dedicated tools and development roadmap, rather than folding it into Instagram’s existing infrastructure.
For marketing teams, the new permissions structure means Threads management can now be delegated more precisely, without granting broader Instagram access as a side effect. This is likely to appeal to larger organizations where social platforms are handled by different specialists or agencies.
Meta noted that the Threads access permissions are rolling out gradually and are not yet available in every region, so businesses in some markets may need to wait before they can take advantage of the new controls.
