Meta donates AI-powered glasses to 130,000 blind US veterans
What the glasses can do for veterans
The Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses offer a suite of features designed to assist those with visual impairments. Using built-in cameras and AI, the glasses can identify objects, read written text aloud, perform real-time language translation, and help users manage everyday tasks — all through simple voice commands. Meta will pair the programme with dedicated training resources, monthly webinars hosted alongside the Blinded Veterans Association, and in-person events where veterans can collect their glasses and receive hands-on guidance.
A familiar playbook — but will it work this time?
This is not the first time Meta has gifted hardware to targeted communities. In 2020, the company donated Portal devices to UK care home residents during COVID-19, only to discontinue the product in 2022. Similarly, its Quest VR headset push into schools has yet to gain meaningful traction. While critics may view this as another promotional exercise with uncertain long-term returns, the AI glasses appear to offer genuine, practical utility for the visually impaired — a user group with a clear and immediate need for the technology.
