Meta Launches Muse, a Personal AI Agent for Tasks and Shopping

Meta has introduced Muse, a new artificial intelligence agent designed to move beyond simple chat responses and actively complete tasks on a user’s behalf. Available as a standalone app and as an in-stream chatbot, Muse links to a person’s Facebook and Instagram profiles to build context, then helps with activities like trip planning, ticket bookings, and completing purchases directly within conversations.

Privacy Built Around a Secure Virtual Machine

Because Muse draws on personal data to function, Meta has anticipated concerns over privacy. The company says the assistant operates on a dedicated system that keeps a user’s information and the agent itself contained separately from other data, and that interacting with it feels similar to messaging a contact, whether inside the Muse app or through WhatsApp. Signal co-founder Moxie Marlinspike, who helped build WhatsApp’s encryption, contributed to this data-separation design, an effort Meta hopes will ease user hesitation about the tool.

Muse is also being positioned as more capable than a typical assistant. According to Meta, the agent can handle concrete tasks such as sending emails or arranging travel, while also supporting broader goals by creating a plan, organizing time and resources, and then carrying out the work independently, including browsing, filling out forms, and negotiating.

An Ideas Library to Guide New Users

To help people discover what Muse can actually do, Meta is building an ideas library that recommends tasks based on how similar users engage with the assistant. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said this addresses a common barrier: many people simply don’t know how to put AI to use, and having the agent suggest its own capabilities could make it more accessible. Muse agents are also expected to learn from one another over time, expanding their shared range of tasks. The tool is free, with users given 100 million tokens weekly, and can additionally connect to Meta ad accounts for marketing support.
