Instagram Unveils Its First Major Logo Refresh in Over a Decade
Instagram has rolled out a redesigned brand identity, marking the first significant update to its logo in more than ten years. The change was announced by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, who shared an early look at the new wordmark this week.
A Sharper, More Modern Wordmark
Mosseri explained that the previous Instagram wordmark had grown dated after more than a decade in use, and that the updated version aims to feel sharper and more contemporary while still nodding to the platform’s original design. Alongside the new logo, Instagram introduced a broader “brand system” refresh that includes updated fonts, icons, and visual formats meant to give the app a more cohesive look across its various touchpoints.
Mixed Reactions From Users
The redesign has sparked a wave of feedback online, with Mosseri’s announcement posts across Instagram and Threads drawing thousands of replies. A notable portion of the criticism centers on the new typography, with many users pointing out that the stylized lowercase “r” in the wordmark can be mistaken for a “z.” Others used the moment to voice broader frustrations with the app, expressing more interest in functional changes to their feeds than in cosmetic updates.
For everyday users, a logo change may seem like a minor cosmetic shift. But such refreshes can help a platform feel renewed and may signal an effort to appeal to newer or younger audiences. So far, Instagram has indicated that only the top-of-app title branding is being updated, though the visual refresh could hint at further changes down the line. Brands using Instagram’s older logo assets on their own websites may want to update those links and icons to match the new look.
