Schmeichel Demands 25-Point Deductions for Man City Over Five Seasons
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has called for a severe Man City punishment, saying the club should lose 25 points in each of the next five seasons. He argues that a heavy sanction is the only fitting response after City were found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations.
A Verdict That Still Shadows English Football
The guilty verdict, announced last month, found that City boosted their income by more than £900m between 2009 and 2018. It has hung over the footballing world ever since, and the debate shows no sign of cooling. Rival supporters, pundits and former players continue to argue over what penalty would be fair for a breach of this scale.
City have not accepted the ruling. The eight-time English champions maintain their innocence and confirmed on October 2 that they have lodged an appeal. A final outcome could come as late as the end of January 2027, so the controversy is likely to rumble on for weeks and months, and almost certainly well beyond.
Frosty Reception at Anfield
The tension was plain on Sunday afternoon, when City travelled to Liverpool. Enzo Maresca’s players were met with a hostile atmosphere from the Anfield faithful, and the backdrop of the verdict added to an already charged occasion. City still left with a win, which only sharpened the debate.
Schmeichel’s proposal would be one of the harshest punishments imaginable in English football. Losing 25 points a season for five years would almost certainly push any club towards the bottom of the table. Whether anything close to that is ever imposed depends on the outcome of City’s appeal and on what the Premier League decides to do next.
For now, the club’s results on the pitch continue alongside a legal fight that could shape the future of the league.
