X Launches In-Stream Stock Trading for US Users
X has taken another step toward becoming a full-service financial platform, rolling out the ability for users to trade stocks and cryptocurrencies directly within the app. The new feature, live now in the United States, builds on X’s existing Cashtag system, which links stock ticker mentions to embedded market data inside posts.
Expanding the Cashtag Ecosystem
The rollout centers on X’s new Cashtag Partner Program, which extends the Cashtags feature introduced back in April. Previously, Cashtags simply displayed market information tied to stock symbols mentioned in posts. Now, users can tap directly through those listings to execute trades by logging into partner brokerage accounts. At launch, X has partnered with several major platforms, including Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken and Coinbase, giving users a range of options for both traditional stocks and digital assets.
This integration means users following market discussions or breaking financial news on X can act on that information immediately, without leaving the app to open a separate trading platform. For active traders who use X to track real-time sentiment and news, the added convenience could meaningfully shorten the gap between seeing information and acting on it.
Part of a Broader Financial Push
The update aligns with owner Elon Musk’s long-stated ambition to turn X into an “everything app,” capable of handling messaging, payments, and now investing in one place. X already offers payment services in the US, which industry watchers view as the foundation for broader financial ambitions. Musk has suggested he ultimately wants X to rival traditional banks as a primary financial hub for users, though it remains uncertain whether people will extend that level of trust to a social media platform for their money.
