Meta Rolls Out AI-Powered Search and Editing Features on Facebook

Meta has announced a series of artificial intelligence upgrades for Facebook, expanding its AI capabilities across search, photo editing, and video creation for everyday users.

A Smarter Search Powered by Real People

The headline update is a revamped AI search experience called AI Mode. Rather than returning generic results, the tool pulls insights from public content across Facebook — including Groups and Reels — to deliver answers grounded in what real users are actually saying. The move signals Meta’s intent to rival Reddit, which has become a leading source of human-driven answers for AI chatbots. Meta believes its vast network of groups holds similarly valuable, largely untapped insight.

New Creative Tools for Photos and Videos

Facebook users are also gaining upgraded photo and video editing capabilities. Building on camera roll scanning tools introduced in April 2026, the new features allow users to create collage videos from personal photos, showcasing monthly highlights through AI-generated transitions and effects. Additionally, Meta is introducing photo presets that enable virtual clothing swaps — letting users, for example, digitally wear a sports team jersey on their profile picture through the new “Wardrobe” option.

Despite the wave of new features, Meta faces a growing challenge. Public sentiment toward AI tools has cooled considerably, with widespread concerns about their real-world value. Internally, Meta is also reportedly reining in AI usage due to rising operational costs. The company finds itself in a difficult position — needing broader AI adoption to justify its enormous investment, while that very adoption continues to drive up expenses.
