Meta Plans to Launch an AI Pendant to Expand Its Wearable Lineup
Meta is developing an AI-powered wearable pendant that would give users hands-free access to Meta AI through a simple tap. According to leaked internal communications reported by The Information, the device is one of several AI hardware products in the pipeline, alongside four new models of AI-enabled smart glasses.
From Startup to Meta: The Limitless Connection
The pendant traces its roots to Meta’s December acquisition of Limitless, a startup previously building its own AI pendant capable of recording conversations and generating summaries and reminders. Meta’s version is expected to go significantly further, offering deeper integration with its AI ecosystem while serving as a less intrusive alternative to the cameras built into its smart glasses.
The company is also reportedly planning a subscription-based “Wearables for Work” tier aimed at professional users, signalling a clear intent to monetise its growing AI hardware range beyond one-time device sales.
Big Spending, Bigger Expectations
Meta has committed to spending $600 billion on AI data centre and infrastructure projects in the US over the next three years. Despite this investment, the company’s own leadership has conceded that AI tools have yet to prove transformative value for everyday users. Meta’s AI Superintelligence Chief Alexandr Wang recently acknowledged that current AI products are “not overwhelmingly better” for most people’s lives.
The pendant could offer a more practical answer to that challenge — acting as a discreet, always-available assistant for translation, note-taking, and automated reminders. As public enthusiasm for AI starts to cool, Meta’s push into purpose-built wearables may be its most concrete attempt yet to show real-world utility, and justify its massive financial outlay to shareholders.
