Snap CEO Evan Spiegel Outlines AI-Driven Future for Snapchat Ads
Snap Inc. CEO Evan Spiegel has laid out the company’s strategic direction, including a major shift in how advertising will work on the platform, in a letter to employees marking Snapchat’s 15th anniversary. Spiegel used the occasion to draw a sharp line between Snapchat and other social platforms, pointing to competitors he says have imitated the app while distancing Snapchat from criticism aimed at the broader social media industry.
Spiegel Cites Wellbeing Research
Spiegel referenced studies linking Snapchat use to stronger friendships and improved wellbeing, acknowledging that the research doesn’t establish causation but framing it as evidence that Snapchat’s impact differs from that of typical social media. He positioned this connective strength as central to the platform’s identity going forward.
A New Model for Generative Advertising
Looking ahead, Spiegel described how multimodal AI could reshape Snap’s ad business. He explained that most digital advertising currently depends on explicit signals like searches or cart additions, making it hard for advertisers to create new demand rather than simply capturing existing intent. Spiegel believes Snapchat can flip that model by using AI to understand user interests and proactively surface relevant recommendations and business matches, rather than waiting for users to signal intent themselves.
Spiegel also highlighted the growing role of creator partnerships in Snap’s ad strategy. He noted that ads made by creators significantly outperform standard branding ads in both watch time and audience attention, and pointed to Snapchat’s large pool of creators now eligible for brand collaborations.
Finally, Spiegel said the company plans to make product discovery and sharing easier within the app, while organically promoting shopping-related content to drive purchasing behavior. While specifics remain unannounced, the letter signals where Snap intends to focus its advertising innovation next.
